studioLjubo sees the architect as a catalyst of the forces shaping urban life. The work of the studio is based on the belief that architecture has to both shape and be shaped by the social, economical and political processes active in the contemporary city. Architecture is an instrument for influencing society.

Sofia Architecture Week 09 debate

On 4th November, during this years edition of the Sofia Architecture Week, studioLjubo organises the Neighbourhoods on the edge debate about the Bulgarian plattenbau suburbs built during communism. After the collapse of the one party state these neighbourhoods have become a laboratory for the transformation from a centralised system to an often wild capitalism. The new role of private property caused a new use of the suburbs, very often in strong contrast with the original socialist urban planning. A new understanding for the use of these suburbs is needed, a formula which is better tailored to today’s realities and possible future developments.
